Key points of the APEC Sydney Declaration on climate change, energy security and clean development, adopted by the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) leaders:

* work towards long-term aspirational goal for reducing global greenhouse gas emissions after the Kyoto protocol expires in 2012;

* all countries to contribute but developing nations should not be expected to bear the same responsibility as richer countries;

* aspirational goal to reduce energy intensity (energy use compared to a country's gross domestic product) by at least 25 per cent by 2030;

* more investment in new technologies to make fossil fuels like coal cleaner;

* "stop, slow and then reverse" program to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere;

* aspirational goal to increase forest cover across APEC region by at least 20 million hectares by 2020;

* public-private sector seminar early next year to look at ways to cut aircraft emissions.

"We agree to work to achieve a common understanding on a long-term aspirational global emissions reduction goal to pave the way for an effective post-2012 international arrangement." - key quote from declaration.
