What can you do when you're trying to prevent hundreds of thousands of people from being murdered but no one seems to care? Shake Hands with the Devil is the story of Lt. General Roméo Dallaire's mission to prevent and restrain the 1994 Rwandan massacres of the Tutsi minority by the Hutu majority, in the face of chilling indifference from the international community.

When Dallaire arrives in Rwanda in 1993 to head the U.N. peacekeeping mission, he is taken by the beauty of the country. But soon the beautiful view becomes distorted with news of massacres that undermine an already shaky ceasefire between the Hutus and the Tutsis. As Hutu extremists take power over the government, their genocidal campaign starts to unfold. What follows is Dallaire's mission to keep hundreds of thousands of innocent Tutsis from being slaughtered within a system crippled by political interests and limited resources.

Based on Roméo Dallaire's award-winning book Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda, the film gives a dire warning of what happens when political and economic interests take priority over human lives. Featuring a brilliant international cast, "Shake Hands with the Devil" was shot almost entirely on location in the Rwandan capital of Kigali, providing this factual film with an even greater touch of authenticity. Canadian actor Roy Dupuis manages to convey both the exceptional dignity and courage of Roméo Dallaire as he tries to avert the genocide, but also the sorrow and frustration he faces at the sight of senseless slaughter and death. "What we want to do is tell a complicated story in as compassionate and intelligent way as possible," said producer Laszlo Barna ( Da Vinci's Inquest, ). The film is produced by Michael Donovan ( Bowling for Columbine ) and directed by Roger Spottiswoode ( The 6th Day, Tomorrow Never Dies, Ripley Under Ground ).
