As Sydney prepared for the largest security lock-down ahead of the APEC Summit, hundreds of Falun Gong practitioners shed a different kind of light on the nervous CBD (Central Business District).

A candlelight vigil, held in the centre of Sydney's Hyde Park, called for the end of the eight-year persecution of the spiritual practice in China.

Falun Gong spokesperson, Kay Rubacek, urged the 21 APEC leaders to bring up the appalling human rights track-record in China with the Chinese leader Hu Jintao during the September 8-10 meetings.

"The persecution of Falun Gong has gone on for eight years..eight years too long. We urge the Australian Prime Minster to bring up the issue of Falun Gong during his meetings with the Chinese Communist leader," Ms Rubacek said at a press conference.

Hu Jintao has landed in Australia and is currently in Perth.

Falun Gong's appeals to end the persecution are expected to continue throughout the APEC summit.
