NEW YORK—With reverence for tradition and a flair for the ancient world, composer and conductor Salvatore Di Vittorio recently founded a very unique non-profit orchestra called the Chamber Orchestra of New York. This orchestra is the first professional New York orchestra to be entirely devoted to young professionals and all five boroughs of New York City.
The orchestra's first performance is scheduled for Oct. 11 at Carnegie Hall.
"The orchestra is composed of 45 musicians. We structured the orchestra's instrumentation to fit Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall," said Di Vittorio. "Our goal is to have one concert in Manhattan with four repeated concerts in all boroughs of New York."
Maestro Di Vittorio and the audition committee interviewed hundreds musicians from all over the country. Out of those, 45 musicians have taken the lead, with many other high-level performers making the sub list.
"We chose the best of the best," said the Maestro. Top musicians recommended all of the musicians who came to audition from the major New York conservatories and New York orchestras.
Why would the plethora of musicians and orchestras in New York want another orchestra? To fill a great void that young emerging musicians are facing.
"There are a great number of highly qualified young musicians graduating from top conservatories and not enough positions available to sustain them. The goal, for the long term, is to establish a new full time orchestra with young professionals."
And the public will of course be much obliged for an orchestra that, as its Web site boldly points out, was founded in 2006, 250 years after the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
The chamber orchestra's debut concert is scheduled for Thursday, October 11th at 7:30 p.m. The program will be Bernstein's Overture to Candide, Respighi's The Birds, Vivaldi's Winter from The Four Seasons and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Soloist in the Vivaldi will be concertmaster Kelly Hall-Tompkins. A champagne reception will immediately follow the concert. Tickets for the Oct. 11 show are $50 and $35 and can be ordered through CarnegieCharge at 212-247-7800 or online at http://www.carnegiehall.org.
