Actor Jeremy Irons was in RTE studios recently to launch RTE Radio One's upcoming human rights drama season.
The cast included Jeremy Irons, Liam Cunningham (The Wind that Shakes the Barley), Nick Dunning (In America) Deirdre Donnelly (Ballykissangel) and Andrew Bennet (Angela's Ashes).
At the launch Sean Love, executive director of Amnesty international Irish section, thanked each of the playwrights and actors, all of whom are participating in the series as part of their commitment to Amnesty International.
"This unique series of radio dramas addresses some of the pressing local and global human rights concerns that Amnesty International is campaigning on, art plays an important role in exposing and challenging human rights abuses and we are grateful to theses artists for continuing that legacy," said Love.
Jeremy Irons recorded part of the first of four plays in total being run by RTE, Mountain Language by Harold Pinter, play that explores the notion of cultural imperialism. The other plays include world premiers of dramas by Roddy Doyle Frank McGuinness and Eugene McCabe.
Keven Reynolds the series producer explains "What makes this season different from other themed seasons of plays is that each play is followed by an expert panel discussion where the panellists discussed the issues raised in the play, so there is a fusion of art and the political issues it may raise"
This is RTE radio's second season of dramas on human rights and originated from a discussion between author Maeve Binchy, Sean Love and RTE radio.
This years themes includes alcoholism in the family, the rights of the elderly and the rights of the child. A new play called "Two Men Meet" by Roddy Doyle will also be broadcast as part of the series on Sunday 14th October.
