New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) announced on July 31, 2007 that it planned to host a "Series of Global Competitions" including the Global Chinese Singing Competition in October, followed by a World Martial Arts Competition, World Chinese Violin Competition, World Chinese Piano Competition, World Traditional Chinese Costume Design Competition, World Chinese Cuisine Competition, World Chinese Realistic Oil Painting Competition, and World Chinese Photography Competition.
Every time NTDTV plans an event, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) tries to interfere and uses lies to raise doubts in people's minds. The interference follows a pattern. I have identified five characteristics of their tactics.
First, the interference has become predictable. Since NTDTV began hosting the Global Chinese New Year Spectacular in 2004, the CCP tried to stop the event from occurring and has tried to do the same thing every year since. In an encrypted telegram dated December 16, 2003, China's Central Television and Broadcast Bureau instructed, "Regarding [NTDTV's Spectacular], the Central leadership indicated that we should try to derail the project. Even if we cannot completely eliminate it, we should try to reduce its influence." Hence, the CCP uses spies to block the broadcast of the Spectacular, it interferes with facility rentals, dispatches a large performance troupe to spread the CCP culture and messages, competes for viewers by presenting their "show" at a similar date, and starts slandering NTDTV. The CCP showed its "attention to detail" when it tried to interfere with the Global Chinese Classical Dance Competition hosted by NTDTV earlier this year.
The CCP's behavior reflects the Spectacular's influence and momentum in developing and broadening the impact of traditional Chinese culture. "Since the CCP gained control of China, it has been truly devoted to destroying the traditional culture. It also stole some forms from traditional culture and established a 'CCP Culture.' This CCP Culture has permeated the entire Chinese society, and functions as a force to protect the cult-like CCP regime. NTDTV's revitalization of traditional Chinese culture will soon lead to the demise of the CCP Culture. That is why the CCP is so frightened, and spreads lies about NTDTV." (Statement from NTDTV, dated April 28,2007). This statement explains why the CCP interferes with NTD activities—the activities directly affect its survival.
A second feature is a delayed response time. On March 13, 2007 NTDTV announced that it would host a traditional Chinese dance competition. It took the CCP until the end of April to launch an attack through Xinhua Net. At the end of July, NTDTV announced its "Global Competition Series." It again took the CCP more than two weeks to react. On the one hand, the CCP internal power struggles probably sent mixed signals to its media outlets. On the other hand, the CCP is shocked by NTDTV's momentum in revitalizing traditional Chinese culture. The article published in the official CCP media attacking the "Global Competition Series" is very similar to the one attacking the dance competition published earlier in the year. One has to presume that the author racked his brain for more than two weeks and still could not find anything intelligent to say. He had to rehash an old article to complete the assignment.
A third feature is anonymity. In the last few years, the CCP has carried out its interference and slander as anonymously as possible. In June 2007, some members of the New York University Chinese Culture Club (NYUCCC) started an online petition to oppose the NTDTV-sponsored dance competition, which was to be held at the university. The CCP is perceived to be behind the event as they control which students can attend foreign schools, and fund the NYUCCC. Their actions constituted a potential violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The CCP might have jeopardized the students' stay in the United States in the future.
A fourth feature is a slanderous nature. The CCP slanders NTDTV and its events but doesn't provide any evidence to substantiate the accusations. With the exception of spreading exaggerated untruths, the CCP can do nothing to media that expose the CCP tyranny, including The Epoch Times, NTDTV, and Sound of Hope Radio.
A fifth feature is that the CCP fails to obtain the intended results. Every time the CCP slanders NTDTV, more people learn about and are attracted to NTDTV. For example, many who watched the dance competition came out of curiosity when they learned that the CCP was trying very hard to prevent it from occurring.
"Morality belongs to the spiritual realm; thus, it is often conceptual. Culture expresses such an abstract moral system in language that can be commonly understood." (Chapter Six of Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party). Currently in Mainland China, harmful food products, including poisonous dumplings, milk powder, chicken, and even medicine, are ubiquitous. This reflects the moral and cultural decline happening under CCP rule, an inevitable result of decades of the CCP's corrupt reign.
