When a pest problem becomes obvious, most of us find using chemicals the easiest solution. Yet, research is revealing that pesticides and other man-made products are as bad for humans as they are for bugs. If you have children in the home, it is especially important to remember that ready-made chemical pesticides can make them sick. Natural or organic pest control methods can provide an easy, safe alternative.

Here are a few suggestions to try out for controlling mice, mosquitoes, and other pesky creatures:

Insect Control

  • Spread ground cinnamon near entry points to deter ants from coming into the house.
  • Mix 1/3-cup vinegar, 2/3-cup water, and 3 tablespoons of dish soap and spray on areas where you have seen ants.
  • Rub basil on yourself to repel flies and mosquitoes.
  • Use a mentholated rub to ward off ticks.
  • Dab a little lavender oil on yourself —you will smell great and the mosquitoes will stay away.
  • Splash rubbing alcohol on yourself to repel mosquitoes

Mouse Control

  • Fill a mesh net bag used for delicate laundry items with mothballs. Hang the mothballs by your garage door or if you want to control mice inside the house, sprinkle peppermint extract on the mothballs. Mice detest peppermint.
  • Sprinkle ground cayenne pepper around the garage, especially near entry holes.
  • Use steel wool pads to prevent mice from gaining entry to your garage.
