MEMPHIS, Tennessee—Rachel and Christina got up early today because it is the annual citywide garage sale day for Lakeland Tennessee. At 7:30 am, Rachel 8th grader and her younger sister Christina, a 3rd grader, sat on the back seat of their grandparents' golf cart waiting for customers.

This annual event was organized by the Lakeland Civic Club. At the main entrances to large neighborhoods, the Civic Club placed balloons to attract more shoppers. "A lot of cars lined up. It's difficult to get in and out," said Mr. Rick Adams, a resident of Stonebridge neighborhood.

The citywide garage sale is not limited to selling household items from Lakeland, as resident's relatives were trucking in stuff to share in the marketing effect. David and Brenda's house is near the entrance of Woodland Park that has more traffic. On a scooter tagged for sale at $800 dollars, Brenda drove to other participating neighbors so as to evaluate the on-going garage sales. "Not as much traffic as last year. The participation is lower this time," said Brenda. Early in the morning, her brother drove in a truckload of stuff for her garage sale.

After she returned home and parked the maroon Venice brand 49cc scooter on her driveway, it immediately caught the attention of a passerby. "It drives up to 45 miles per hour, of course you can't ride it on the (Interstate) highway." David was answering questions, "The last time it got gas? More than a month ago." Brenda said it would be better to remind the residents several days before the garage sale to improve the participation rate.

Inside Rachel and Christina's grandparents' garage in the Woodland Park neighborhood, Ms. Eboni and Ms. Wonda from Raleigh are looking at home decorations like plastic vines and flowers. "We bought a lot. It's a good bargain," said Eboni.
