Album Review: Wilco—'Sky Blue Sky'

(Nonesuch)

From the soft opening notes of "Either Way," with its near-jazz guitar soloing, and Jeff Tweedy's intimate, soothing vocals, this is a treat.

Wilco's contribution to US alt-rock can't be understated, and Sky Blue Sky has an admirable ability to move deftly between grimy blues, soft rock, country confessionals and shimmering jazz.

Avant-jazz guitarist Nels Cline knocks out sparkling riffs on "Impossibly Germany," and "Walken" simply rocks.

There's a spontaneity here that makes it not only a genuinely exciting album, but also one of Wilco's finest.

**** (Four stars out of five)
