March 8 marked the celebration of the 30th anniversary for International Women’s Day in Canada.

International Women’s Day recognizes the economic, political and social achievements of women.

The YWCA took the opportunity to announce the seven recipients of its Women of Distinction Awards, who will be honoured at a dinner on March 27.

Awards will be given in seven areas, including social justice, community development, communications, diversity, health, and corporate leadership, as well as one award for a young woman of distinction. This year’s recipients will be Darlene Lawson, Tamam McCallum, Ann Medina, Talat Muinuddin, Sharon Hampson, Kiki Delaney, and Saron Ghebressellassie.

The dinner event, to be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the YWCA. It promotes the achievements of women who have assisted other women and girls and serves to inspire others by bringing their accomplishments to the forefront.

YWCA is a charitable organization with over 30 programs built to support women during “turning points in their lives.”

They offer everything from shelter to leadership training.
