At approximately 8:10 p.m. on Sunday March 18, Queensland's Gold Coast was illuminated by the New Tang Dynasty Television's (NTDTV) Chinese New Year Spectacular. Portraying a celebration of the amazing and rich history of Chinese art and culture, the audience of some 1,500, were treated to something special, the likes of which had certainly never been seen at Conrad Jupiter's International showroom before.
With extraordinary backdrops supporting each of the individual acts, the vibrant costumes were more than a compliment to the impeccable choreography. Those present were taken on an almost mystical journey through time, both earthly and etheric, and at times it was difficult to differentiate the two. Key historical figures in China's 5,000 year old history were introduced through both traditional song and traditional dance. It was not hard to find pure admiration and affection for these almost familiar legends.
Intermission, allowed the audience to reflect and recall. A gentleman in his 60s, William Wing Yip offered the following interesting response.
"The troupe are true professionals and obviously are disciplined in their training," Mr Yip said. "The solo performers were exceptional and moving."
As the last few people hurried back to their seats after the short break, bright yellow flowers opened the second half, spinning from the hands of heavenly beauties, and mesmerising the audience. Dancers moved effortlessly as one, whilst backdrops transported the audience to a China of far simpler times.
More solo performances and a memorable dance depicting Mongolian herdsmen drew part two of the performance to a close, but not before a grand finale percussion ensemble. This lifted the "willing" to heights of exhilaration and a touching conclusion. The entire cast then graced the stage to farewell the appreciative and predominantly upstanding spectators.
On exiting the show, Rebecca Tranter, a mother of two, summed up the audiences experience.
"I totally enjoyed the whole show. It took me away to another time and place," she said, adding that "the colour and detailed in the costumes were amazing."
Ms Tranter said she would certainly be attending future NTDTV Chinese New Year events.
