Canadian sports icon Steve Nash is taking fitness to soaring heights with a new state of the art sports club. Though the club itself is still under construction, a preview centre designed to encourage curiosity and promote membership is already open, and offers a sneak peak of what will be unveiled when doors open to the public in June 2007.
Located at 610 Granville Street in the heart of downtown Vancouver, the Steve Nash Sports Club is shaping up to be a leader in stylish and innovative workout technology. At a cost of $5 million and spanning 38,500 square feet, the three-story building will house state of the art equipment including futuristic plasma gear—a first for Vancouver.
Outfitted with personal flat screens on all cardio machinery and digital lockers to protect belongings, the luxurious facility will also boast a sauna, a steam room, an internet lounge, a juice bar and a bistro suitable for social settings.
"We want the experience of members that walk in to be so energetic, so enthusiastic and so caring that when they leave they can't wait to come back," says Senior Vice President Martin Stein.
With health conscious and sustainable living concepts in mind, Nash and his partner Leonard Schlemm endeavoured to take a holistic approach and create a green building that is eco-friendly and complements it's surroundings. Their constructive and creative designs include bamboo flooring, recycled tires for rubber floors and reused shoelaces to produce area rugs.
"We are trying to be as eco-conscious as we can," says Stein. "We want our product to sustain the environment."
The building will be the first of its kind to aspire for the Leeds Silver certification, the top notch recognition in green buildings.
Constituted as a brand himself, Nash—crowned twice as the most valuable player in the National Basketball Association (NBA)—is a model in athletic achievement and physical endurance. Stein believes that Nash's reputation for hard work and dedication will be reflected in what the club facilitates.
"People are attracted to him. People want to be around a person as ambitious, authentic and approachable as Steve Nash," says Stein.
Nash was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in May 2006. He continues to act as an advocate of health through the Steve Nash Foundation, a nonprofit group aimed at children's health, growth and awareness.
Partner Schlemm is no stranger to the health industry either; he is co-founder and former chairman of the 24 Hour Fitness chain which now has 400 locations worldwide.
Memberships for the Steve Nash Sports Club start at $100 a month and will gradually increase throughout the phases of the preview until the club opens in early June.
