The use of colour, costumes and backdrops set the scene for each legendary story performed in NTDTV´s 2007 Chinese New Year Spectacular show, but the choreography and dance techniques form the creative language that is understood by audiences of all backgrounds.
The Divine Performing Arts group, the main force behind the Spectacular, has its mission to explore and to rediscover the essence of true, traditional culture. Thus it creates and performs pieces that center primarily around classical themes and divinely-inspired culture. It aims to present to audiences works that express pure goodness and beauty.
After the first Spectacular show in Canberra this week, The Epoch Times spoke to audience members to find out how they received the performance.
Diane Moy of Canberra spoke of how she observed the performers' use of colours to creatively interpret each performances' theme. "It's very bright - I notice they use terrific colours, you know, hot pink and purple and green to get your attention, and the ribbons they use to, you know, express their ideas," said Ms Moy. "I think it's something quite different from anything I've been to before."
Canberra residents Zach Chew and his mother Alice are of Malaysian-Chinese background and both were able to understand and appreciate each of the programmes in the Spectacular. "It's also very interesting; everyone can just assimilate and just enjoy the show as it is," said Zach.
Alice spoke of how she had first thought she would not be able to understand what the dance was going to be about, but found that the show had been well-produced to consider all audiences, using different elements to convey each programs´ meaning.
"I think the narration at the front did help a little bit, but the way they danced was pretty much portraying the whole meaning on its own as well, so they did very well," said Alice. "At first I thought I would never get what they are going to dance about, but the way they actually portray that, and the way the narration was done, you kind of like gel into it, say, 'oh ok, that's what it actually means,'" she explained.
While the Spectacular´s title tells audiences that the show is about Chinese culture, the response from audience members of non-Chinese background or those who have been outside of China for most of their lives, is that the show´s content is relevant and of great interest to people of all nationalities.
The NTDTV Chinese New Year Spectacular has extended its global shows to more screenings in New Zealand, Korea and Taiwan with the Divine Performing Arts group who are the artistic force behind New Tang Dynasty Television's Holiday Wonders and Chinese New Year Spectacular shows each year. Its mission is to rediscover the essence of true, traditional culture and to bring arts to the world that celebrate human dignity and positive values. It produces and performs works that center on classical themes and divinely-inspired cultural traditions. The group's performances aim to provide an experience of consummate beauty and goodness.
