NEW YORK–The youthful audience shouted and jumped up and down with excitement after Friday's matinee performance of NTDTV's Chinese New Year Spectacular.
When Sarah, Tenisha, and Genesis from Frederick Douglass Academy 3 in the Bronx were asked what they liked, they said, "The little boy flipping!" They were raving about the acrobatics of 7-year-old Stanley Cheung in the piece "The Monk Who Endured."
"The kids went crazy over the Mongolian dance ("Herding on the Mongolian Plains")," said Middle School 322 teacher Erik Andersen, who brought his 6th-grade class from midtown Manhattan.
"I loved it! The color, the spectacle, the costumes," added Andersen.
When the hosts asked, "Are you having a good time?" the auditorium rocked with a long "YEAH!"

In honor of the Chinese Year of the Boar, those who were age 12 (or 24 or 36) shouted, "I'm a pig!" at the hosts' urging—after an explanation of the positive qualities of the pig.
The audience also repeated the Cantonese new year greeting "Gong Hay Fat Choi" as if they had used it all their lives.
Lee Zapato, Eric Reyes, and Kansy Nienta from P.S. 84 in New York said they liked "the whole thing," but they admitted that they enjoyed the drums in the finale "Victory Drums."
"Excellent!" was the summary offered by a teacher from P.S. 115 in Washington Heights, Manhattan.
From the "oh's" for the colored streamers in the piece "Rainbows" to the "ooh's" for the twirling orange cloths in "Forsythia in Spring," it was easy to know that the audience was engaged while absorbing the traditional Chinese culture portrayed throughout.
