[Editor's note: Since The Epoch Times' publication of "The Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party in November 2004, a wave of "Quitting the CCP" has spread across China. As of date, over 29 million people have withdrawn from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its affiliated organizations at the Epoch Times Tuidang Web site. The following account is an example of the grassroots spreading of the "Quitting the CCP" movement.]
In June 2004, I bought a motor tricycle and started making a living by driving a motorcycle taxi. Since then I have been taking every chance to persuade my passengers to quit the Communist Party and its affiliated organizations.
One day, I picked up a passenger at the entrance of the Procuratorate employees residence compound. Though I guessed he was a government official, I decided to talk with him about the "three withdrawals [1]." I told him about a recently discovered megalith that bears naturally-formed characters saying "The Chinese Communist Party Collapses." Then the man asked me, "Do you know who I work for? How dare you tell me to quit the Party?" I said, "It doesn't matter who you work for. I only wish the best for you. I believe you can feel my kindness."
He told me he was a Party Secretary and can't quit the Party easily. He suspected that I was a Falun Gong practitioner. I said I was. Then I told him how I was deprived of my previous job and illegally sentenced to several years of forced labor because of my belief in Falun Gong. I explained that Falun Gong practitioners were all law-abiding people. "We didn't do anything wrong," I said. "The Constitutional Law says that every citizen has the freedom of belief. The Communist Party (CCP) is high-sounding when they say Chinese citizens have democracy and freedom, but that is all for deceiving foreigners. Inside China, everyone knows that the CCP sits above the law and it can persecute anyone it wants to. So, it is not that there is something wrong with Falun Gong. It is the CCP that is trampling the law and deceiving people."
My passenger listened in silence. But before he alighted he said, "Be careful, young man. What if your passenger was a plainclothes police officer?" Although he did not say he wanted to quit the party, I recognized understanding in his expression.
I have also met passengers who refused to listen and threatened to report me. One day a middle-aged man ordered a round trip. All the way I tried to persuade him to quit the CCP, but he did not say a word. After a short while, he happened to take my taxi again. As soon as he was aboard he said, "You must be a Falun Gong practitioner. I will report you to the police."
I was very calm because it wasn't the first time I ran into such situation. I said, "Most of the police officers and residents in this neighborhood know that I practice Falun Gong. For practicing Falun Gong I was even imprisoned for a few years. We were only practicing our exercises and did not do anything wrong! What other government would persecute people for talking about their sufferings? The Party labels people who tell the truth as 'anti-Party' and treats them like criminals. What human rights is this? I believe a good person like you can understand." He did not say anything else, but gave me a look of understanding when we parted.
I ran into several people like this, but I persuaded them not to report me. I would often say to them, "I persuade you to quit the Party only for your own good. As a matter of fact, does it have anything to do with me whether you quit or not? What benefit will I get from you? Nothing! I've told you so much, and don't even ask you for a cup of water. Where else can you find someone so nice to you?" No one could contradict my words. I think this is the power of compassion. In order to persuade more people to quit the CCP, I try to avoid arguments over taxi fare. For example, one evening a young lady took my taxi, but changed her mind after I told her how much the fare would be. I told myself I could not lose this opportunity for one yuan (US$ 0.14), so I said, "Please come back. We can discuss the fare." She got on my taxi again. During the trip she agreed to quit the CCP. I was happy for her, and told her, "Do you know why I asked you to take my taxi? It is because I wanted to tell you about this. As for the fare, it is not an issue. Your ride is on me." She said, "Oh, I can't do that. You need to make a living." I replied, "Money is not important. What's important is you will have a bright future." "Alas!" She exclaimed. "You are indeed a good person."
This is how I spread the facts and persuade people to perform the "three withdrawals" everyday in the past few years.
[1] The "Three Withdrawals" mentioned refers to renouncing membership in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the Communist Youth League (CYL) and the Communist Young Pioneers (CYP).
