The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) general secretary Prakash Karat said on Friday that India would not have to face mid-term polls in the immediate future, adding that the Manmohan Singh government would complete its tenure with the support of the parties of the left.
Karat said the CPI(M) decided not to harp any further on its withdrawal of support from the UPA since the Indo-US nuclear deal issue had been "deferred". " However, we continue our campaign against the deal," he said.
Karat said Left wanted a discussion on the deal in the upcoming winter session of Parliament that begins Nov. 15. However, he made it clear that CPI(M) does not want any voting on the issue. If any no-confidence motion was raised on the issue in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's parliament directly elected by the people, he said the CPI(M) and other Left parties would abstain.
Meanwhile, the World Nuclear Association ( WNA ) chief John Ritchie criticized the Left's opposition to the nuke deal, adding that the pact will end 3 decades of injustice to India.
"No single step could better strengthen India's future prospects on the world stage than ratification of this historic deal." said John Ritchie.
The WNA is a confederation of companies connected with nuclear power production.
