1. The Competition
The Epoch Times First Annual International Photography Competition is hosted by The Epoch Times, an international media group comprised of newspapers, websites, publishing houses and printing companies worldwide. Both professional photographers and amateurs are welcome to participate. Apart from earning prizes, winning entries will be published in the global newspaper The Epoch Times – published in 17 languages on the web and in 10 languages in print, with a weekly circulation of 1.5 million in 30 countries.
2. Competition Theme
Winning entries will accurately depict people, objects, social moments, and/or nature scenes, and express a spirit of justice, kindness, and/or beauty. The entries will be evaluated based on traditional esthetics and the effective use of techniques of light and shadow. Through your images, we seek to display the essence of the art of photography.
3. Awards and Categories
In addition to having their photos published in Epoch Times editions worldwide, the photographers will compete for the title of competition Champion (overall winner), who will win 5,000 USD for the winning photograph. Runners-up will win the following prizes in three categories:
Category A: Society and Customs (Social situations, civil rights movement, news, culture, customs, religion, traditional art, traditional life styles, etc.)
Category B: Natural Environment (natural landscapes, geography, ecology, animals, trees, vegetation, etc. We will look for photographs with a unique sense of esthetics.)
Category C: Advertisements, portraits, fashion, still objects, and architecture (character of a human being, modeling, performance, lighting design for theater, etc.). Photos in this category may be digitally enhanced to bring out the beauty of the subject matter.
One Gold Medal, 2 Silver Medals, 4 Bronze Medals and 20 Excellence Awards will be awarded per category:
- 1 Golden Medal: 2,500 USD, or photography equipment or travel services of the equivalent value
- 2 Silver Medals: 1,000 USD each winner, or photography equipment or travel services of the equivalent value
- 4 Bronze Medals: 600 USD for each winner, or photography equipment or travel services of the equivalent value
- 20 Excellence Awards: 100 USD for each winner, or photography equipment or travel services of the equivalent value
4. Jurors
The competition will be judged by over 10 senior photographers, artists and publishing experts from the East and the West – the exact composition of the will be announced at a later time. Jurors will evaluate the work with reference to the theme of the competition, while looking at composition, narrative, and technical excellence.
5. Rules
We do not accept photographic negatives, or any photographs that have entered another competition prior to this one. The committee will have an initial evaluation on all entries before the actual judging starts. Those entries that fail to comply with our rules and regulations or fail to supply the required information will be disqualified. We will not notify the contestants of the disqualified entries.
5.1 Format and Entry
We accept both black-and-white and color photographs. Participants can submit a maximum of 4 photos per category, for a maximum total of 12.
1) Mailing: Two sides of a photograph sent by mail should be 10 to 12 inches, with the maximum side to be less than 12 inches. No framing is needed. Please include your entries on a CD-ROM as well when if you choose to send your photographs by mail, according to the convention in (2), below. For those contestants that plan to submit your photographs via regular mailing, please write down on the back of the photos the categories, file names, photo titles, author name, address (including zip code), email address and additional contact information so that we may notify you if you win the competition. The information you submit in your email must match those you put in the entry form.
2) Email: You may send your photographs by email. The sent resolution of each photograph must not be less than 500KB or larger than 1,000KB. If your photographs are chosen, you will be required to send them again in the highest available resolution. For those contestants that plan to submit your photographs via email, you must indicate the categories of the competition in your email subject and indicate the categories, file names, photo titles, author name, address (including zip code), email address and additional contact information so that we may notify you if you win the competition. The information you submit in your email must match those you put in the entry form.
Please choose only one of the above methods to deliver your photos. Please do not use both.
5.2 Required information
Please put the same information you put on the entry form on the back of your photographs or in your email, including the category entered, photograph ID, titles of the photograph, your address and your email.
5.3 Please include your country, city and name when you create photograph IDs.
In the format COUNTRY-CITY-NAME-CATEGORY-NUMERIC_ID. For example:

5.4 Liability
All entries will be handled with the best possible care. The contest administration or The Epoch Times cannot be responsible for loss or damage. Physically damaged entries may be disqualified. Photographers are responsible for insuring their own work, if they so desire. The Epoch Times reserves the right to reproduce chosen photographs in its print and electronic media, contest promotion, and relevant publications and websites. Photographers retain all other rights, but will not be paid in any form for the Epoch Times' use of their material.
The Epoch Times assumes that the competitors will follow the rules and regulations. The author of a photograph is solely responsible in the event that their entry violates copyright, national or international law, or causes damage to reputation. Entries will not be returned to their authors. Submission of an entry into this competition implies acceptance of all conditions here stated.
6. Winning Entries
All winning entries will receive a medal and an award certificate. Selected works from semi-finals or finals, as well as the winning works, will be published on Epoch Times websites and in other Epoch Times publications. They will also be exhibited in New York City and other major cities around the world.

The judging, and the awards ceremony, will be held in New York City. The exact location of the awards event will be announced at a later time. Those winners who are unable to attend will still be honored at the awards ceremony, but will receive their awards and prizes by mail, at the address provided at the time of contest entry.
