WASHINGTON—Two Democratic lawmakers called on the acting head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission to resign Tuesday, saying she had not done enough to protect American consumers in the wake of millions of recalled toys from China.

Nancy Nord, the acting commissioner of the safety agency, has criticized parts of a Senate bill that would boost funding and staff for her agency and make other reforms.

"It's time for Nancy Nord to step aside," Sen. Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, told reporters during a teleconference briefing. "She's an acting chairperson, but we've seen more inaction than action."

Rep. Rosa DeLauro, a Connecticut Democrat, agreed, saying: "She should go."

DeLauro expressed frustration at Nord's opposition to legislation to increase the agency's budget and clout, saying Nord "shuns all of her regulatory responsibilities."

"I think it's time for her to resign immediately from her role as acting chair," said DeLauro, who also called for an open seat on the commission to be filled.

The safety agency has about 400 full-time staffers, compared with 978 in 1980, according to testimony at recent congressional hearings.
