In Alberta this week, voters—although in low numbers—headed to the polls to elect candidates in the province's civic elections.
With over 60 percent of the votes in the election, Dave Bronconnier cruised into his third term as Calgary's mayor this week. He easily fended off main challenger Alnoor Kassam, who reportedly spent over $1 million on his campaign. Kassam received 17 percent of the votes.
The political make up of the Calgary council, however, was renewed with 4 new members, after 3 incumbent aldermen were defeated and one decided not to run.
Jim Stevenson defeated the incumbent Helene Larocque in Ward 3, and in Ward 8, John Mar unseated Madeleine King. Joe Connelly won out over Craig Burrows in Ward 6, and Brian Pincott became the new alderman in Ward 11, where the incumbent Barry Erksine decided not to run.
In Edmonton, as was expected, Mayor Stephen Mandel got elected for a second-term with almost 66 percent of the votes, leaving his only serious challenger, Don Koziak, far behind. Koziak captured a quarter of the votes. The Edmonton council, similar to Calgary, got a shakeup with four new faces. Among the newly elected were Ward 6's Amarjeet Sohi, an Edmonton Transit bus driver of East-Asian descent, and 28-year-old Don Iveson of Ward 5, who was the director of the advocacy department for the University of Alberta Students' Union.
