The World Ghost Convention will be officially opened by the Rt. Hon Lord Mayor and Mayoress of Cork Donal Counihan and Breda Counihan on the 26th of October at Cork City Gaol.

The convention was founded by Richard T. Cook, a historical educational writer who grew up in Cork in the late 50s and 60s. Cook told The Epoch Times that he was prompted to found the convention because reported sighting of spirits and ghosts are only the tip of the iceberg as many people are afraid, ashamed or even embarrassed to come forward for fear of not being taken seriously.

The event organiser Catherine Courtney said that the convention provides an ideal opportunity for many people fascinated with the supernatural to hear a colourful assortment of supernatural topics explored by speakers from different backgrounds and professions. She added that the convention was established to help those who have had supernatural experiences by raising public awareness and highlighting the fact that they are not alone.

One of the speakers at the convention, author Kathleen Mueting, said that in her view there are no coincidences and that all things happen for a reason and it's in our own best interests that we are more open to supernatural possibilities.

Another key event which spurred author Richard Cook to found the ghost convention was a life saving event which left a marked impression on him. He relates that as a young boy fishing from St. Vincent's bridge in Cork he fell into the water. The current was fast and strong and dragging him down. In the water as he struggled he saw the smiling face of a woman, the next thing he knew he was miraculously transported 500 yards to the slip steps on the north mall. Cook said that to this day he does not know how he reached the slip, as the current was too strong.
