SAN DIEGO—Two Chinese naval vessels, the guided missile destroyer Qingdao and the supply ship Hongzehu arrived at San Diego Naval Base on September 18 for a three-day stop-over. Volunteers from the Los Angeles and San Diego Service Centers for Quitting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) showed up at the port to talk with the crew. The volunteers told the crew all about the huge wave of withdrawals from the CCP. Due to massive media censorship and information control in China, this was the first time these crewmen had heard that millions of their countrymen had publicly renounced their affiliation with the CCP.
According to a volunteer from the Service Center, since the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party was published in November 2004, over 13 million Chinese have quit the CCP. Out of extreme fear, the Chinese communist regime has tried desperately to keep this information silent and out of the hands of the Chinese people. These Service Center volunteers felt the need to seize the opportunity to talk to the sailors while they were in the United States and free to receive the information without fear of government reprisals.
On September 18 and 19, the volunteers displayed banners near the main entrances of the naval base and also at a zoo the Chinese crew visited. "Navy officers and soldiers, welcome to quit the CCP!" the banners read, Nine Commentaries preaches the good news of the kingdom of God to the people" and "Quitting the CCP is for your own safety!" There were many people holding banners with similar messages encouraging the sailors to join the movement.

When the buses transporting the Chinese crew drove past the banners, they all turned to look at the evocative banners.
Ms. Wang, one of the volunteers, had a chance to talk with the crewmembers. "Some of the officers and soldiers saw the 'Quit the CCP' banners by the roadside and on sides of our van when they came out of the base for sightseeing or business," said Wang. "They are all very nice and polite. I can see that they are eager to know the outside world. But when I gave them the Nine Commentaries, they did not dare to accept it. I guess they were ordered not to."
The conversations between the volunteers and the crewmembers ranged over various topics including the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre, human rights, Falun Gong and resignation from the CCP.
Dr. Gao Dawei, Chairman of the Global Service Center for Quitting the Chinese Communist Party, said, "Quitting the CCP is a non-violent movement. It is also a great event of the whole world, because the CCP is the source of the world's turmoil. Quitting the CCP is the Chinese people's effort to abandon an evil organization in a peaceful way and at the lowest expense. It is best for China as well as for the whole world."
According to the service centers, they have been very successful at helping members of the Chinese military resign from the CCP. These officers often use pseudonyms when they quit, in order not to endanger themselves and their families.
