TORONTO — Eight people were arrested on Tuesday in connection with a Boxing Day gun battle on the shopper-filled streets of downtown Toronto that killed a 15-year-old girl, injured six others and shook the Christmas calm of Canada's largest city.
Jane Creba, 15, a top student and star athlete, was caught in the gang-related crossfire and killed while holiday shopping on December 26, 2005.
Toronto Police Chief William Blair told a news conference on Tuesday that two adults and one young person are charged with second-degree murder and six counts of attempted murder. Four adults and one young person are charged with manslaughter.
"All of the accused are members, or associates, of street gangs active in the city of Toronto," Blair said.
Police have also issued a warrant for a male adult who is in England, as well as a male young person, Blair added.
In related arrests, 17 people, including one young person, face a range of charges, including trafficking in cocaine and possession of the proceeds of crime.
The accused are to appear in court on Wednesday morning.
