As drivers change gears, CAA South Central Ontario is teaming up with the Ministry of Transportation to provide seniors and their families with the tools needed to keep them safe while out on the roads. Seniors are invited to participate in CAA's free Shifting Gears seminar to be held in Mississauga June 2, Sault St. Marie June 6, Burlington June 14 and Cambridge June 20. A second tour will be held in the fall in which Shifting Gears will be held in Whitby/Oshawa Oct. 5, Barrie Oct. 12, Owen Sound Oct. 17 and Stratford Oct. 19.

Pre-registration is recommended as the spots fill quickly. To register, call 1-877-588-2088. Members and non-members can also register by logging onto www.caasco.ca and click on the free Shifting Gears seminar icon on the member favorite tool bar that will take you directly to the registration form.

The seminar helps mature motorists keep their independence by providing them and their families with information those aged 80 and over, the effects of aging and medication on driving ability, rules of the road, Ministry of Transportation requirements, community resources and ways to approach someone about giving up their keys.

"Shifting Gears helps seniors refresh their driving skills, review the latest in technology, vehicles and the driving environment which allows them to comfortably and confidently merge with traffic," said CAA SCO traffic safety supervisor, Anna Halkidis.

Valuable information is presented in a comfortable setting, providing participants with access to the expertise needed to answer their questions. Attendees can browse the marketplace of community resources from 12:30 to 1 p.m. The seminar will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Free refreshments will be available during the intermission.

With a variety of topics covered by the experts themselves – from a pharmacist, MTO spokesperson to an experienced mechanic - participants will learn about everything from how aging can affect a seniors driving ability to the current Ministry of Transportation testing requirements for those aged 80 and over.

As spots are limited and fill quickly, call 1-877-588-2088 to register now.
