The majority of the world celebrates Earth Day on March 21, the day of the spring equinox, but many eco-friendly Chicagoans will rise to the occasion on April 22 instead, aiming to paint the city a shade greener.

Interested in making the world a better place to live? Here are a few environmentally stimulating suggestions for the people of Chicago.

If you are a morning person…

Head for the local parks, as the Chicago Park District will hold clean-up activities and learning opportunities at 30+ parks throughout the city. The starting time for most activities is at either 9 or 10 o'clock a.m. The historic Humboldt Park Boathouse may offer the biggest event of the day, including live entertainment, dancing, animals, music, crafts and activities for children.

For the artistic nature lover…

The Morton Arboretum is observing Arbor Day and Earth Day as one. Visit the Arboretum for a show of art pieces created from sustainable and recycled objects. The show will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 22 and 23. Help plant trees from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and stay to enjoy the "taste of the trees" dinner from 5 to 7 p.m.

The great outdoors…

Fresh air and exercise fit right in on Earth Day, so put on some walking shoes for an Earth Day Walk at the Chicago Botanical Garden. Staff will accompany walkers through the McDonald's Woods, a rare 100-acre oak woodland, at 1 p.m.

As a student of the Earth…

Follow your inspirations and learn more about man's impact on our planet. Join the third forum of the Climate Change series for Human Footprints. The forum takes place from 10 a.m. to noon at Hughes Auditorium at Northwestern University.

Make this 37th Earth Day special. If everyone in the City can do one thing, we are sure to see the changes in the coming year.
