NEW YORK—U.S. stocks rose slightly in thin trading on Tuesday, rebounding from the previous session's sharp fall, as a rise in oil prices helped energy shares.
However, worries about Microsoft Corp.'s new operating system hurt some technology stocks and retail stocks slipped after a report showed the holiday shopping season was not as robust as some investors had been hoping.
Shares of Microsoft Corp. slipped 0.5 percent and were the top weight on the Nasdaq after the New York Times reported researchers and hackers have found potentially serious flaws in its new Windows Vista operating system.
