Alberta Farmer Faces Loss after 170 Cows Drown

CALGARY, Alberta—A farmer in the Canadian province of Alberta faces a loss of close to $100,000 after 170 cows and calves plunged through ice and drowned in a reservoir, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported Tuesday.

The cattle owned by Lief Erickson, who farms near the rural community of Viking, 110 kilometers (68 miles) southeast of Edmonton, on crashed through the ice of a dugout where they had gone in search of water on Dec. 3. Their carcasses remain frozen in the ice, the broadcaster said.

The drowned cattle are about half of Erickson's herd and the loss isn't covered by insurance. Nearby communities are holding a fund-raising auction of cattle and equipment to help the family.

Unlike most animals, cows have no fear of walking on ice and little sense of danger.
