NEW YORK—A lion jumped and rolled on the ground, and heavenly beauties visited the Earth at the Bronx Museum of the Arts last Wednesday. Attended by students, parents, and local Assemblyman Michael Benjamin, the free performance was held to introduce traditional Chinese culture to the public, and is part of a larger program that seeks to educate students about China's 5,000-year-old culture.

"I feel that it is very important that our young people get exposure to the many diverse cultures that are available in the greater New York City area," said Assemblyman Benjamin at the museum. China is the most populous nation on earth, and Chinese is the third most prevalent language in the United States behind English and Spanish.

The program, put together by the New York-based Chinese-language television network New Tang Dynasty TV (NTDTV), offers opportunities for students of all backgrounds to affordably go see Holiday Wonders, NTDTV's Chinese holiday show at the Beacon Theatre, and become more familiar with Chinese culture.

"This Holiday Wonders event and the NTDTV Community Outreach program give the children an opportunity to expand, learn about other cultures and add on to what they already know," said Benjamin.

For free, the program also provides lesson plans for teachers wanting to teach Chinese culture. The plans touch on topics like the Chinese zither, the history of the founder of Taoism Lao Zi, and the significance of golden dragons.

"When you're offering to educate and uplift the human spirit, you're improving and expanding the mind and the individual, a totally wonderful and good thing to do," said Ms. Kennedy Benjamin, the assemblyman's wife and chief-of-staff.
