Google announced last week that it would be blocking certain search terms on its Chinese website, in accordance with the demands of the Chinese Communist regime, which seeks to limit the free spread of information to maintain its grip on power.

Searches for terms like democracy, Taiwan which has been independent since 1949 but which Google still lists as a province of communist China, Tibet, which China invaded and conquered, and the suppressed spiritual group Falun Gong are likely to turn up no results. Searches for "Jiang Zemin," the dictator who started the Falun Gong persecution, have already been filtered in China.

"There is no question. Google would tell you that going into China is about making money, not bringing democracy," said John Palfrey, director of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University and also a law professor.
