Four Epoch Times reporters have been imprisoned in China since Dec. 2000. The Epoch Times International is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Zhang Yuhui, Meng Jun, and Shi Shaoping-who were all sentenced to 10 years-and Huang Kui, who was sentenced to 5 years.
In July 2000, The Epoch Times began operating in Beijing through the efforts of a group of dedicated reporters. Out of fear that the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) human rights violations were being exposed to the world, the CCP targeted Epoch Times reporters in China.
The Ministry of Public Security formally launched an investigation of The Epoch Times on Dec. 16, 2000. According to incomplete statistics, more than 90 people were targeted for investigation, and more than 30 were arrested. At least a dozen Epoch Times reporters were sentenced to 3 to 10 years of imprisonment. Some were sent to labor camps. Most of them were intellectuals who graduated from top universities.
The Epoch Times reporting of honest, accurate news from China is ground-breaking and helps prepare for the day that China has a healthy, independent civil society. Every society in the world that respects the rule of law and the rights of its people also supports the free and independent voice of the press.
The Epoch Times will continue to report the true news of China, regardless of interference and pressure from the CCP, and will continue to call for the immediate, unconditional release of Zhang Yuhui, Meng Jun, Shi Shaoping, and Huang Kui.
