While going home on the subway on the night of September 11, I heard woman saying loudly, “If I don’t get paid, why would I welcome him (Hu Jintao).” I looked in her direction and saw a middle-aged woman in a scarlet jacket gesticulating to two women next to her, “If they don’t pay me enough then I’m not going. Who has time to play their game?”
Later, her conversation took a turn, “I think Falun Gong also dishes out money. Think about it, if money isn’t given, who’d go sit in front of the consulate?”
When I heard that, I stood up from my seat and smiled and greeted her, “Ma’am, I just heard you say that Falun Gong dishes out money. How do you know this?”
She replied loudly, “Hey! Think about it, who would be that stupid? Sitting motionlessly in the harsh cold.”
I said, “No one gives them a cent, it is all done out of their conscience. I am a Falun Gong practitioner, so I understand the situation well. Think about it, if you and your family are persecuted, would you sit at home and wait for people to come pay you in order for you to speak up against your family’s injustice? That would be too unreasonable, right? For six years, several thousand Falun Gong practitioners have been persecuted to death, including infants. People with conscience will not ignore it; therefore, whether it is sitting in front of the consulate or collecting signatures for a petition, it is all with a purpose.”
She asked, “It is really like that?”
A female next to her said, “This makes sense, we actually do not understand the situation, it was just a guess.”
The lady in the scarlet jacket continued, “Last time the community organized us to protest in front of the United Nations in return for fifty dollars. That’s more than I make in a day, so I went. Once I got there, I just got a few pictures taken, shouted a few slogans and then went home, so it was worthwhile. However, when Li Peng came to visit, they offered me money to be in a welcoming group. But I didn’t go because I really detest him…”
While sitting in front of my desk and recalling these events of the other day, I came to realize the truth. A nation’s leader shouldn’t resort to deceptions like this; he’s making a laughing stock of himself, and in the end, the joke is on him.
