LONDON - Police arrested two people on Friday at London's Liverpool Street station, closed the complex and were investigating a suspect package.
"There is a suspect package on the concourse," a London City police spokesman said. "It may be linked to the arrests."
A London police source said the arrests are "potentially very significant."
Other reports said the two arrested were women.
A witness in the nearby Great Eastern Hotel said police flooded the area, emptied the station quickly, and told people in the hotel to stay away from the windows.
Police told hotel staff they were planning to carry out a controlled explosion at the station, which is in the heart of the capital.
The station was reopened after about an hour, suggesting the package had been dealt with.
