Simon Gillet, the husband of Australian cyclist Amy Gillett who was tragically killed last week in Germany, has announced a foundation is to be established in her memory.

Mr. Gillet arrived at Sydney Airport with the body of his wife on Monday July 27 en route to Ballarat Victoria, where she will be buried this Friday.

At a press conference he announced the Amy Gillet Safe Foundation which will provide support for the rehabilitation of his wife’s injured team-mates, a scholarship for young female cyclists and a campaign on road safety for cyclists and drivers.

“We need to make a positive out of this,” he said.

Ms. Gillet was killed and five of her Australian team-mates were injured when a teenage driver lost control of her vehicle and drove into the Australian women’s road cycling team.

Mr. Gillett told reporters that he was touched by the support offered to him while he was in Germany.

“I gained a lot of strength from both her team-mates in hospital and their other team-mates over there who weren’t in hospital, that ride for pro teams, who know her very well,” he said.

“It was good to catch up with them and good to try and offer some support to the girls who are injured.”

The badly injured 18 year-old driver, Stefanie Magner, has apologised via a letter to the riders, their families and loved ones and the Australian public.

Donations to the Amy Gillet Safe Foundation can be made through the Cycling Australia website.
