ESCONDIDO, CA — Santa hats, marching bands, and Christmas crowds lined the streets of Escondido on Dec. 10, as the Escondido Jaycees hosted their 55th Annual Christmas Parade. Added to the mix this year were six spinning Chinese umbrellas, held by a group of dancers representing New Tang Dynasty TV's 2006 Chinese New Year Gala.

The volunteers from the NTDTV Chinese New Year Gala, first-time participants in the Escondido parade, won a third place trophy in the Novelty Walking Group division.

Many in the crowd commented on the dancers' brightly-colored traditional Chinese costumes, based on styles worn during the Tang Dynasty (approximately 600 A.D. to 900 A.D.), one of the most glorious periods of Chinese history.

According to the volunteers from New Tang Dynasty TV (NTDTV), the station hopes to share the traditional values and culture from China's past, much of which has been lost in recent years, with people in the San Diego community through the NTDTV Gala.

"It's great to be in the parade, to bring some Chinese culture to the community," said 16-year-old high-school student Ying-Ying Zhang, one of the dancers. This was Zhang's second parade as part of the Gala, as she also participated in the La Jolla Holiday Parade on Dec. 4. "It's a lot of fun, and it's supporting a good cause," she added.

One of NTDTV's missions is to foster understanding between people of different cultures, and the Gala, which unites performers and audience members from different cultural backgrounds, plays a major part in that.

Another important mission for the station is to protect the free flow of information to and from China.

Local residents warmly welcomed the NTDTV Gala to the parade. Yolanda Fleet, of the Woman's Club of Escondido, was delighted that Escondido would be one of only 16 cities around the world to host the Gala, along with New York, Paris, Sydney and Seoul.

A total of 115 entrants participated in the Escondido parade, and organizers estimated that 5,000-10,000 people attended. As the Gala dancers passed the people lining the streets, the beauty of sharing between different cultures was plain to be seen. Smiles all around.

The NTDTV 2006 Chinese New Year Gala will be held at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido on Feb. 9, 2006. For more information, please visit www.gala.ntdtv.com , or www.sd-gala.com .
