TORONTO — Ottawa Senators winger Martin Havlat was suspended by the NHL for five games on Monday for kicking Hal Gill of the Boston Bruins in the groin.

"One of the factors...is Mr. Havlat was assessed supplementary discipline on three occasions during a two-month period in 2003-04 including a two-game suspension for a kicking incident," Colin Campbell, the NHL's executive vice-president, said in a statement.

Havlat kicked Gill when the Boston defenseman pushed him on to the back of the net during Ottawa's 5-1 win on Saturday.

No penalty was called and neither player injured.

The suspension will also cost Havlat US$66,326 in earnings.
