HONG KONG - According to the Hong Kong-based Information Center of Human Rights and Democracy, at least five dissidents were arrested or disappeared during Zhao Ziyang’s memorial ceremony at the end of January.

Ma Shaofang, one of the 21 Chinese student leaders in the June 4th Tiananmen Square incident, left Shenzhen for Beijing to attend activities commemorating Zhao Ziyang, the former general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party who died Jan. 17. Ma went to Zhao’s mourning hall at Zhao’s home with wreath to show his respects on Jan. 19 and granted an interview with members of overseas media. On the afternoon of Jan. 27, he had planned to attend Zhao’s memorial ceremony with another June 4th student leader, but never showed up. His cell phone was turned off and he was unavailable by any means tried.

It is believed that he has been arrested and will be sent back to Shenzhen under police escort.

The 40-year-old Ma was a student of Beijing Film Academy during the June 4th Incident. Together with Wang Dan and Chai Ling, he was on the list of 21 most-wanted June 4th student leaders by the Chinese government. Later he was sentenced to three years in prison.
