An observer for The Epoch Times in Beijing found that Zhao's courtyard was cleared up and empty with few condolers at noon of on January 26th. Before the wreaths in the drawing room were piled up like a mountain. Now they are all have been cleared away, and the characters "Ziyang's study" is revealed. Before, in the study the elegiac couplets were hung everywhere, now they all have disappeared and the books inside can be seen.

In the mourning hall, there are still 5 or 6 wreaths from Zhao’s children and relatives. In the morning, Li Jingquan’s family member sent over a wreath. Zhao's children were not in the hall then.

At that time three women were in the mourning hall. They hoped to take photos as a memento, but they forgot to bring the camera with them. The staffs there are very warm and took photos for them. The staff said that only 5 or 6 groups of people came to the hall.

But the attitude of the staff outside the door is quite different. There were no police forces outside of Zhao's door, and only a few people popped their heads in and looked around.

Observers have noticed that thousands of wreaths in the morning hall were cleared away and the courtyard was empty by the afternoon of the 24th.

Chen Yizi, former consultant of Zhao Ziyang, told an Epoch Times reporter in New York that the government had strengthened the military police and plainclothes around Fuqiang Alley and many people were refused admission on the 23rd. At that night, more than 2,000 wreaths were cleared away and Zhao’s family members were also carried off. Chen Yizi indicated that the government forced Zhao's family to accept their conditions and tried to solve the problem with strong methods. He called on the international society to pay close attention.

According to Reuters, on January 25, the government strengthened security to hold back people offering condolences, while compelling Zhao’s family to accept the mourning ritual conditions. Reuters quoted an informed source saying that the Beijing authority hoped to bring this issue to completion as soon as possible. They strengthened the security check to prevent more people from offering condolences so that Zhao's family has to compromise and agree with the funeral date settled by the government.

It was reported that Zhao's family and the government are still in a stalemate on Zhao's farewell ceremony.

Moreover, the observer in Beijing stated that the police claimed that "Zhao is a political offender” when interrogating appealing people. Some others claimed that Zhao was traitor to CCP.
