Beijing - Henan Province resident Wang Shiyuan, who went to Beijing on January 20 to file an appeal with the central government, was beaten and permanently disfigured by police.
Wang had first made a condolence visit to the residence of former Chinese Communist Party Secretary General Zhao Ziyang, who died January 17. Within a day of his visit, police beat Wang so severely that his eyeball was knocked from its socket (see photos following the link at the end).
On January 21, Wang went to the Appeals Office of the State Council and the Appeals Office of the National People's Congress, which are located next to each other and are commonly called the Two Offices. On his chest, Wang wore a white paper flower commemorating Zhao’s passing.
At the entrance to the Two Offices, hundreds of plainclothes police were patrolling and stopping people from appealing in Beijing. The officers asked Wang why he wore the paper flower, and he answered that he was wearing it to memorialize Zhao. The police then pummeled him so severely that his right eyeball was hanging on his cheek. His face and clothes were covered with blood. Wang bolted away and escaped.
In a statement, Wang said, “I was mercilessly beaten for no reason. My head was covered with bumps and bruises, and blood flowed everywhere. Many other people were also beaten. [The police officers] completely disregarded the laws of the country and brutally beat people who came to appeal. Under the law, the police deserve severe punishment.
