NEW YORK—They were just a couple of sentimental fans mournfully waving goodbye in the darkness of a Bronx Sunday night.
But the sportswriter could have sworn they were the apparitions of Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle saying goodbye to Yankee Stadium. Then he wiped the tears from his bifocals.
It's been a grand run since 1923 and the heyday of the Babe. "The House that Ruth Built" has been the home of megastars like Joe D., Mickey, and Reggie; quotemeister geniuses like Casey and Yogi; pugilists like Billy; and tragic heroes like Thurman.
Hey, kid, if you have to ask for the full names, sit down with Dad or Grandpa, who will fill you in on the cast of characters that lived in this part of The Bronx.
Next year, the team that has triumphed in more World Series than any other will move across the way to a new Yankee Stadium. But ya know, time marches on, and to those fans of the boys in pinstripes who say, "It'll never be the same," I can only reply, "The best is yet to come. The king is dead; long live the king!"
