In his 1996–2007 tenure with the Yankees, Torre built up one of the most successful managerial careers in baseball, with 10 American League East Division titles, six American League pennants, and four World Series titles.
Torre was an all-star nine times during his professional playing career with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (1960–1968), St Louis Cardinals (1969–1974), and New York Mets (1975–1977). Before New York, Torre managed the New York Mets (1977–1981), the Atlanta Braves (1982–1984), and the St. Louis Cardinals (1990–1995).
The Hall of Fame’s 64 member Veteran’s Committee will consider nine other MLB players—Maury Wills, Gil Hodges, Al Oliver, Dick Allen, Jim Kaat, Tony Oliva, Vada Pinson, Luis Tiant, and Ron Sanoto—along with Torre. A 75 percent approval vote is required to earn election, with the enshrining ceremony to be held on July 26, 2009.
The ballot was formed in August by Hall of Fame members, after being narrowed from a total pool of 21 players. Results will be announced on Dec. 8.
