LOS ANGELES—The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed quarterback Byron Leftwich to a one-year deal, choosing him over QB Daunte Culpepper, the team said on its website (www.steelers.com )

The Steelers put both quarterbacks through a workout on Sunday before settling on the 28-year-old Leftwich.

"He's a young guy, had a great workout here this afternoon, is very lean, looks to be in great shape," Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin told reporters. "He's been a franchise quarterback on a playoff team. We're fortunate to add a guy like that."

Pittsburgh was in need of a backup for starter Ben Roethlisberger after veteran quarterback Charlie Batch broke his right collarbone in the preseason opener on Friday.

Leftwich has thrown 52 touchdowns to 38 interceptions in 49 career NFL games and has a passer rating of 79.7.

He served as the Jacksonville Jaguars primary starter for three seasons before signing with the Atlanta Falcons last year. Leftwich suffered an ankle injury in his first start with the Falcons and was eventually released.
