CONCORD, North Carolina—Jeff Burton held off the late charge of Kasey Kahne to win the NASCAR Charlotte 500 race by less than one second on Saturday.

The victory moved Burton up two spots in the Chase to the Sprint Cup, NASCAR's premier championship, into second place, 67 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson, who finished sixth.

Kurt Busch finished third on Saturday.

Burton said the win proved the race for the title was far from over.

"It's a long way to go. Everyone's giving the trophy to somebody (Johnson) right now," Burton said.

"No one has given us a chance, except for us. Those guys (Johnson's team) have a tremendous amount to lose, we've got nothing to lose."
