As the melamine crisis spreads throughout the world, products from Korea’s largest cracker manufacturer, Lotte, as well as products from Nestle and Masterfoods have now been found to contain the poisonous chemical.

On October 5, 2008, South Korea’s Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) announced that melamine had been detected in the Lotte’s biscuit Choudy, the Korea Mars Company’s peanut-flavored Snickers chocolate bar and their milk chocolate M&Ms, Nestle Korea’s KitKat, and other food products. An urgent recall order was issued for all these products.

The Korea Mars Company’s peanut-flavored Snickers chocolate bar and their M&Ms product are both produced in China. Nestle Korea’s Kitkat candy bars are also produced in one of its factories, located in Tianjin, China.

The Lotte Food Company announced on the 5th that it will recall all similar products on the market, as well as its “applesauce” and “strawberry biscuits” which are produced in a factory in Qingdao, China.

Except for OEM products, this is the first time that melamine has been detected in the Chinese produced products of a Korean company. So far, melamine has been detected in a dozen or so “Made in China” processed food, including biscuits and creamer.

Additionally, in Iran, according to reports in Broadcasting Corporation of China, the government is quite nervous about the milk powder poisoning incident, and announced that they will stop importing Chinese dairy products. Any dairy products already imported from China must be immediately taken off the shelves in Iran.

The Iran newspaper quotes a Ministry of Health official as saying they have not yet detected melamine in any of the Chinese products, but to put consumers as ease, Iranian stores should immediately take Chinese dairy products off the shelves.
